What kind of memory is best for a laptop? - best laptop memory

I will soon have a laptop - not sure what brand. I was told that I should get a laptop with less memory will be cheaper and only then you get a memory card to store all my "important" files. I use to install Windows XP, and maybe some games, outragous for my children - but nothing. Is this a good idea?
