I have a nikon D40 SLR and want to get better pictures of my kids playing basketball? - nikon d40 lenses for dummies

I) a 55-200 (without VR, the glass now, but my pictures are not clear, they are blurry. Should I point the settings on the camera or a new target? I do not know much about photography then please answer dummy:)
