If I put my bootable internal IDE hard drive into an external USB enclosure, can I boot from it? - ide internal hard drive

There is no need to configure anything differently?

I use Linux.

Yes, if your motherboard supports.
The BIOS of the motherboard must support booting from a USB device. Many people do today. You may have the ability to make work.

This is not a Linux user - but needs the BIOS to boot from USB, it is safe.

So I think you ought to boot from the USB drive.
