Your tags expired on the last day of registration. If the CA is like Arizona, where some tags on 15 expires. You can assess late fees on the first day of next month. You had to pay one years of preparation for their costs if the state is not very pleasant.
"Scott is right. If you register (registration) that expired in September, the sanctions have begun on that day. Waiting will not help because the amount of the fine increases with the time they are outstanding.
It is hard to say, not because they say clearly on the website. I know that you cancel 30 days, so I think that not only fire, until after 30 days, but I do not know exactly. Do not go after the expiry, or who may have their vehicle towed away.
